Hazelmere Dam, South Africa
Hazelmere Dam, South Africa

The raising of Hazelmere Dam by an unprecedented 7m required technology never seen in the KwaZulu natal region of South Africa. Extensive feasibility studies established that the optimum solution to facilitate the raising was to install 84 high-capacity rock anchors through the concrete superstructure into the underlying rock.

The anchors, installed in 355mm boreholes, ranged in size from 49 to 91 strands (15.7mm diameter) and were up to 90m long. With test loads up to 19042kN, these anchors equalled the largest ever installed on a post-tensioned dam. ...

... AnchorTest was successfully used throughout the contract to analyse and manage the data derived from the mandatory suitability and acceptance testing.

In April 2022 the region suffered severe flooding due to sustained rainfall and this resulted in the dam spilling even though the anchor stressing programme in the spillway location was only 86% complete. The effectiveness of the design, construction and testing using AnchorTest was adequately demonstrated by the fact that the dam maintained its structural integrity during the spilling.
